MOTS-c is a naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptide studied for metabolism, energy use, exercise-related biology, and the way cells respond to metabolic stress. Researchers have measured MOTS-c in humans, while many of the more dramatic effects reported after giving MOTS-c come from animal studies.

In scientific terms, MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Research has examined AMPK-related signaling, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, cellular stress responses, skeletal muscle biology, and metabolic adaptation. It is sometimes called an “exercise mimetic,” but that description is based largely on preclinical findings and should not be treated as an established human effect.
